Of all Marvel's X-Men characters, the most popular is, without a doubt, Wolverine. With an accelerated healing factor, Logan has lived far beyond a typical human lifespan, a trait and history that has been touched upon in numerous adaptations, including the Fox films that starred Hugh Jackman in the role. For a long time, the character's age remained a mystery, and fans could only guess at how many decades or centuries lay behind him.
As the character has risen in prominence, those questions have been answered, first in the comics themselves, and later on the big screen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. They provide Logan with a definitive birthdate, which can be extrapolated to determine his age. Here's a quick overview of Wolverine's differing ages in the comic books and movies and what that may mean for future versions of the character.

Wolverine famously made his debut in 1974's Incredible Hulk #181 (Len Wein, Herb Trimpe, Jack Abel, Glynis Wein, and Artie Simek), followed by his formal admittance to the X-Men in 1975's (Giant-Sized X-Men #1 Len Wein, Dave Cockrum, Peter Iro, Glynis Wein, and John Costanza). At the time, he was very much a man of mystery, with a past even he couldn't remember and adamantium bones that weren't a part of his mutant abilities. Bits and pieces of his story were filled in here and there over the years, often in the name of a greater mystery. The Weapon X comics of the early 1990s colored in some of that history, depicting how Logan's skeleton was altered and the subsequent loss of his memory. That came a few years after Sabretooth had taunted Logan with a possible genetic connection during their altercation in the Mutant Massacre storyline.

Even so, it wasn't until 2001's Wolverine: The Origin limited series that Wolverine's true origins, and thus his age, were officially known. The comic book version of Wolverine was born James Howlett sometime between 1882 and 1885 to John and Elizabeth Howlett on their vast estate in northern Alberta, Canada. It's later revealed James is actually the illegitimate son of the Howletts' groundskeeper, Thomas Logan. Fired by his employers, a drunken Thomas kills John before James reveals his mutant bone claws for the first time and kills his biological father. Shocked by the bloody turn of events, Elizabeth commits suicide while James runs into the Canadian wilderness with his childhood friend Rose.
He assumes the name Logan as he grows up in the Yukon and becomes embroiled in many important historical events, including fighting in both World Wars, alongside Captain America and Black Widow. Years later, Logan is experimented on by the Weapon X program, giving him his indestructible adamantium-laced skeleton and claws, but at the expense of his memories. Long afterward, Wolverine joins the X-Men at Professor Xavier's request to help save his captured team from Krakoa. Assuming Wolverine was born about 1882, this would make him approximately 130 years old at the time.

As an interesting side note, Logan is one of the few characters in the Marvel Comics universe to have a fixed date of birth. The "sliding timescale" — an official attempt to retcon the characters' seeming agelessness despite decades of comics stories — officially posits everything in the Marvel Universe since the creation of The Fantastic Four to take place 15 years before the present time (whenever that happens to be). Logan's birth lies before that rolling date, which means his birthdate doesn't slide forward like most other characters.

Jackman's cinematic Wolverine is even older than his comic book counterpart. The prologue of X-Men Origins: Wolverine reveals him to have been born in 1832. He discovers his mutant powers in 1845 after he kills Thomas Logan. Alongside his half-brother Victor Creed, who eventually becomes the villainous Sabretooth, Logan fights in the American Civil War, both World Wars and Vietnam. In the interim, Logan is glimpsed in 1962, during X-Men: First Class, at the age of 130. In the final days of the Vietnam War, Logan and Victor are recruited by William Stryker as part of his black-ops unit, Team X, before Logan quits due to the team's disregard for human life.

The X-Men prequel movies provide a few more hard time-stamps to cement his age at the time they each took place. Before linking up with Weapon X to gain his adamantium-laced skeleton and claws, Logan is possessed by a version of himself from an alternate future in 1973 to change history during the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past. His body is 141 years old at the time. In the original timeline, Logan joined Weapon X six years after quitting Team X. However, in the altered time seen in Apocalypse, he enters Weapon X in 1983 before he is freed by Jean Grey at age 151.
After that, the timeline gets somewhat fuzzy, thanks to the early X-Men movies' deliberate vagueness. 2000's X-Men is set in "the not too distant future," according to one of the film's title cards. That was subsequently firmed up to be 2003: the same year that X2: X-Men United opened. Considering that the events of the first sequel begin almost immediately after the original movie ends, it's an easy lift, and it allows most of the timeline to more or less match the release date of each movie. Wolverine first meets the X-Men in 2003, at the ripe age of 171. Wolverine would later face off against Magneto and Dark Phoenix during The Last Stand in 2006, at the age of 174. Haunted by the death of Jean Grey, Wolverine temporarily leaves the X-Men before returning to Japan in 2014's The Wolverine at 182 years old.

The apocalyptic future of Days of Future Past is set in 2023, making Wolverine 191 as he finally shows signs of his advanced age with gray streaks in his hair. After changing history in 1973, this timeline is altered, but an epilogue shows Wolverine still serving as an instructor alongside the X-Men, his graying hair still visible. Given its tangential status to the rest of the X-Men films, it is unclear what part of Wolverine's past is still applicable in Logan, but the film's producers have maintained that it takes place in 2029: approximately five years after the events of Days of Future Past, which would make him 196 years old.

Of course, the X-Men movies are rife with several other continuity errors, and the possibility of Logan being an alternate timeline unconnected to some or all of the previous films. In Logan's timeline, for instance, no mutant children have been born in 15 years, well before the events of Days of Future Past, which includes many mutant children in its final shot. Furthermore, the timetables given are largely off-screen confirmation from the film's creators and aren't specifically stated onscreen in the earlier films. has brought yet another Logan variant into the mix, presumably with the same birthdate but at an indeterminate period in his particular timeline. That has implications for the other movies as well, suggesting that at least a few of them are in separate timelines. That can blur the specifics of Logan's age here and there.
Thankfully, both the movies and the comics have pinpointed his moment of birth. That makes calculating his general age for any point in the movies easy enough, and even in the vaguest circumstances, an astute viewer can get it within a few years. Amid it all, Jackman himself has remained remarkably ageless: a great credit to the actor, but no help at all to anyone trying to figure out how old his character is.
